Av – The 5th month
The 5th month on the Hebrew (God’s) calendar is called Av.
This is the 5th month, on the Hebrew (Jewish) calendar, God’s calendar.
The 9th of Av is a day of fasting (only one day’s fast), and it is the last day of the 3 weeks of mourning that started on the 17th of Tammuz, the 4th month.
We mourn these days, showing that we are standing with Israel.
Mourning also meaning that a joyful event like getting married cannot take place in this season and mourning also means to appreciate more Gods word and commandments in this season,
where we occupy ourselves with Torah (old testament and the new testament) reading and praying for the restoration of Israel (Psalm 122:6).
The name Av literally means: “father.”
It derives from the root which means “to will” or “to desire.”
The Hebrew letter Hei is assigned to this month, and it means: “to reveal,” and stands for the Divine Spirit of God.
This month brings Israel to it’s “lowest point” on the Jewish calendar.
The 9th of Av was the day of the sins of the 10 spies, as well as the destruction of both Temples Jerusalem. This day brakes the hearts of Jewish people all over the world.
Many tragic events took place against the children of Israel (the Jews) in this month:
· Both the first and second Holy Temples which stood in Jerusalem were destroyed on Av 9: the First Temple by the Babylonians in the year(423 BCE), and the second by the Romans in 69 CE.
· The Jews of England were expelled by King Edward I on this date, 9th of Av, in 1290.
· The Jews of Spain were expelled by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella on the 9th of Av of 1492, terminating many centuries of flourishing Jewish life in that country.
This is the month when people starts to get a desire for the father, through the willingness to change by realizing their mistakes and start to have a desire to turn back to Him in spirit and in truth (teshuvah).
This is also a season of relating your physical behaviors or natural characteristics to God’s commandments, that will help you inhabit the true spiritual inheritance of God’s DNA.
